Levenshulme Traders club together for Kids Christmas Treat

Despite the challenging economic climate, Levenshulme's generous traders have got together with Manchester City Council to provide its young people with its annual special Christmas treat.

Two hundred and fifty free Christmas presents will be given out by Father Christmas at the annual Christmas lights switch on extravaganza on Wednesday 3 December.

Lawrence Hennigan from the traders association said "It's great to see the local traders digging deep to help provide a Christmas treat for the local children. It has been a bit of an annual tradition now for a number of years and no credit crunch was going to stop us putting it on. Everyone looks forward to this family friendly event, it is one of the highlights of the year and gets everyone ready for Christmas. It is important that everyone supports each other during these challenging times. I do not know of any other area that provides such a treat for its youngsters, but then again Levenshulme likes to be different."

The special family friendly outdoor Christmas party takes place on the village green on Chapel street and starts at 4.30pm when Father Christmas flies in on his congestion busting - '192 Bus'.

As well as the free presents for the children, the community will be entertained by the award winning Joe Casserley and Vicky Richardson from ALL FM Radio station who will entertain the crowds with an array of festive hits.

The celebrity packed official Christmas lights switch on takes place around the areas sixty foot high Christmas tree at 5.30pm.

Switching on the lights will be The Lord Mayor of Manchester Cllr Mavis Smitheman, by the award winning Levenshulme boxers John and Joe Murray, Fred the Red from Manchester United and local councillors and traders.
